When choosing a credit card the consumer needs to take into consideration their unique situation. In some instances a rewards program may be crucial and in others an annual fee may be worthwhile.
Most people consider the interest rate to be the most important factor when choosing a credit card. If you will be carrying a balance then you will definitely want to get the lowest interest rate possible. However, even if you plan on paying your balance in full each month you still need to be aware of the interest rate. After all, life happens and things come up where you may need to carry a balance over more than one billing cycle.
Another factor to consider is a rewards program. This can largely depend on your unique situation and lifestyle. For instance, if you travel a lot for business you may want to have a rewards program that gives you airline miles, hotel and rental car discounts, and other travel savings. On the other hand, if you hardly ever travel and you have a large family you may opt for a “cash back” rewards program wherein you earn a percentage of cash back on every purchase.
Yet another option is to go with a prepaid credit card. This is much like a debit card in that you put money in your account and then use the card for purchases up to that amount. The more money you use, the more money you need to place in your account so it is available when you need it.
One thing that some people tend to overlook is the grace period of your credit card. Most people assume that their payment is due on the same day each month when in actuality the day may change. In general, longer grace periods are better for the consumer because it gives more time to borrow money before having to pay it back.
Keep in mind that the most important thing is to read the fine print and make sure you choose a card that fits with your lifestyle.
